About the KSU Friends of the Library
Who are the KSU FOL?
The KSU Friends of the Library (FOL) supports students along their academic journey. Founded in 2003, the KSU FOL are alumni, faculty, retirees, community members, and library staff united to encourage and further the work of the KSU Library System, supporting students along their academic journey. KSU FOL transforms community donations into tools for student success.
Why we matter?
In partnership with students, community members, and alumni, KSU FOL has created “take what you need” office supply stations for students in Sturgis and Johnson Libraries. In addition, the KSU FOL provides a coffee/snack cart during midterms and finals for students to refuel while studying. With extended hours and increased use during these times, the Library System’s operation hours surpass those of other eateries or campus study areas, allowing students a quick way to obtain sustenance and distraction-limited study spaces.
FOL services are funded directly with proceeds from our bi-annual book sales, memberships, and monetary donations. The KSU FOL plans to expand into programming opportunities for students, such as author talks, and engagement opportunities that facilitate student learning.
Why give to the KSU FOL
The Kennesaw State University Friends of the Library (FOL) believe in the importance of a strong, relevant, well-funded, and well-staffed library system. The FOL strengthens the appreciation and understanding of the KSU Library System’s primary mission of providing resources and services for all students and the KSU Community. FOL encourages the support of the Library System through the cultivation of connections and advocacy among the University and the surrounding community. FOL supports the KSU Library System by raising funds to help pay for programs, materials, and services that enhance and support student academic success.
Since 2003, KSU’s Friends of the Library have supported student learners by providing school supplies at each campus location, supporting the growth of the library book collection through their Adopt-A-Book program, and beginning fall 2021 an Adopt-a-Textbook program for high use and high-cost materials for students to use free of charge. The FOL hosts therapy dogs for mid-term exams, and provides coffee, teas, and snacks for students during final exams.
KSU’s FOL needs your support to continue to provide programs, materials, and services that enhance and support student academic success. Your KSU FOL Membership is a tax-deductible contribution that will be recognized in writing by the KSU Development Office.
History of the KSU FOL
In fall 2003, a simple idea was put forward with the endorsement of the KSU Student Government. The suggestion was to create a non-profit, Friends of the Library, organization to enhance and support the KSU Library’s resources and services to students. That organization was established with support and membership by KSU President Betty Siegel and was called the Friends of the Horace W. Sturgis Library at Kennesaw State University.
Since inception, this non-profit organization has been a non-stop force supporting the KSU Library System’s mission of furthering academic student success and campus research initiatives. The Friends work to raise both awareness and funding for enhanced Library System resources, services, spaces, and library professionals. Several of the services that the KSU Friends of the Library began to provide beginning in 2003 were popular reading collections, office supplies for students utilizing the photocopy machines (pencils, staplers, tape), author book talks / presentations, campus used book sales, and hosting other fundraising events.
In 2015, Kennesaw State University was consolidated with Southern Polytechnical State University, and this organization was renamed the Kennesaw State University Friends of the Library supporting both the Horace W. Sturgis Library on the Kennesaw Campus and the L. V. Johnson Library on the Marietta Campus. Activities of the consolidated Friends group started in the spring of 2016 with book sales hosted annually at both libraries.
In 2019 the KSU Library System reorganized. At this same time, a new unit called Engagement and Assessment Services Team (EAST) was recreated. Part of the mission and vision of EAST is to reprioritize and expand FOL activities.
In 2021 the Kennesaw State University Friends of the Library began updating membership information / benefits and actively began recruiting memberships. Part of the membership drive included revitalizing the Friends by sponsoring a new series of book talks and fundraising events.
One of the new initiatives was the development of an Adopt-a-Book and an Adopt-a-Textbook initiative to help building stronger library collections and off set the high cost of academic textbooks in an effort to make college more affordable. Through the power of reading and loving books, donors can honor the special people in their lives through their sponsorship materials that support the KSU curriculum.
All efforts of the Kennesaw State University Friends of the Library are done to help further support student academic success through enhancing library services and resources. Your membership makes a difference. Please consider joining us.

How to Donate Gently Used Items to the KSU FOL Book Sales
The KSU Library System Friends of the Library (FOL) group welcomes donations of books and other similar materials to be determined by the chair of the group. Donations are not automatically added to the library collection but are instead added to the biannual FOL book sale. Should donations meet collection requirement, they may be looked at to be added to the collection.
Before donations are accepted, the Friends of the Library Chair must be contacted to ensure space for storage, whether the age of donation is appropriate, and whether or not donations are currently being accepted. In addition, the Friends of the Library does not offer services requiring the disposal of unwanted books from KSU Departments or other public or private collections.
The library does not appraise donations, provide donors with a list of donated items, count the number of items, or a bookplate of donated items added to the collection. However the library will supply a copy of the signed Deed of Gift to the donor as acknowledgement of the donation.
